Our Services
Development
McCormick Bowers Associates navigates groups through the difficult, ever-shifting funding landscape. We offer a constellation of essential services and products: We perform development audits and analyses, develop funding diversification plans that explore both traditional and new resources, identify prospective donors, and structure and run funding efforts. With years of hard-won experience, in grant-making as well as grant-seeking, we know how funders think, an understanding that is surprisingly rare. We can assess and advise, set up systems, or even serve as a fully out-sourced development department--at half the cost of internal staffing.
Planning
Nonprofits, as collaborative ventures, gain particularly from good planning: Shared, intelligent strategy; careful definition of organizing principles; ambitious and achievable objectives. Our organization takes groups through the complexities from detailed and precise documentation, research and analysis to clarification of mission, from making workable plans for immediate change to charting long range growth strategies.
Diversity
Diversity is the great strength of America. Boston benefits from being home to people of many ethnic, racial, linguistic heritages. Our community life is enriched by people of all orientations and genders, with varying abilities, citizens and newcomers, speaking English and dozens of other languages. At McCormick Bowers Associates, we can lead organizations in developing stronger, better trained, more diverse—and happier—board and staff. Our consultation process recognizes that the support of the group's stakeholders (leadership, board, staff and program participants) is key to a successful change. Using an inclusive, anti-racist lens, McCormick Bowers helps organizations set goals and processes to benefit from our community’s growing diversity.
Coaching
Jane Bowers, Founder and Principal of McCormick Bowers Associates, also acts as an adviser to nonprofit leaders, coaching and supporting them as they navigate the complicated waters of steering mission-driven organizations. Nonprofit leaders manage multiple relationships to achieve goals, with donors, funders, board members, staff and program participants. A wise, experienced counselor—who knows how the parts fit together—can help new and experienced executive directors, acting as coach and sounding board.
Facilitation
We design and facilitate processes that lead to developing consensus, momentum and achievable plans. We help identify and overcome barriers; design and implement needs assessment, training sessions and internal advisory groups—all services that can lead to greater effectiveness.
Support for Effective Philanthropy
For donors, choosing the most meaningful and successful ways to contribute time and treasure to reach personal philanthropic goals can be daunting: We help them explore the results they want to achieve, which groups are most effective and how well the groups they consider supporting are using resources. After decades of study and action working with nonprofits to advance social justice, Jane Bowers can help donors articulate their goals; research and explore nonprofits working in donors’ fields of interest; and help shape meaningful support.
Civic Engagement
Believing that an engaged citizenry is a key to healthy community life, Jane Bowers joins with a range of organizations to promote grass roots civic action, including registration and voting, aiming toward open and accountable government. She supports programs and groups that bring people together to build community around shared issues and interests.
